I have been making soap for about two years, so when I heard this book was coming out, I was interested, but I knew that there probably wouldn't be a lot of new information in this book for me. Well, I was wrong. There is a ton of helpful info in this book that I hadn't ever heard before (which led to downloading a saponification chart for the different oils I love to use). The step-by-step instructions are so easy to follow, but since I love making soap, I wondered how well this book would work for a newbie. Enter my mom.My mom loves my homemade soap. But she always felt intimidated by the chemistry aspect of making it herself. Since she was visiting when I got my review copy of this book (all opinions are my own and I wanted to write this review to help other soap makers out there), I decided to help her make one of the recipes. She loved it! She said she'll be purchasing her own copy when she gets home.We made the Charcoal Cedarwood Face Soap recipe (using the base soap recipe for the cold process soap in chapter 5). It turned out great (as pictured). It leaves my skin super soft and clean, but not too dry. The only thing I would mention is that the charcoal makes a mess when you mix it into anything. I tried mixing it with the vinegar before adding it into the soap mixture and both the cup and the spoon I used are still covered in the charcoal two dishwasher washes later. I would just pour it directly into the soap mixture next time with a disposable spoon.For experienced soap makers wondering about the base recipe in this book: I found it mild (not overly sudsy) and easy to make. Next, I plan to try the shaving bar recipe and a variation on the shampoo bar recipe.One recipe fills a standard square silicon/wood mold about 2/3rds of the way full.I have tested the base in this book to see if you can also use it for hot process. I don't know whether the author would promote doing so, but I found that about 40 minutes in the crockpot on low with Saran wrap over the top works wonderfully if you're too impatient to wait for the cold process to do its magic.I love this book and plan to use it for a ton in the future. If you've always wanted to make soap, but felt too intimidated, this is the book that will help you make your bubbly breakthrough. I can't recommend it highly enough! If you follow Simple Life Mom's newsletter or have purchased her products from Etsy, then you already know how amazing and unique her homemade soaps can be! This book gives you the knowledge and confidence you need to jump into soap making yourself. It covers simpler, less time-consuming processes like melt-and-pour, and progresses to making your own lye soap (like our grandmothers did!) The book has oodles of step-by-step recipes using various oils, scents and colorants, with an emphasis on natural materials and vegan alternatives. Making your own soap allows you to control the ingredients so that you and your family are not exposed to unnecessary chemicals and allergens. The instructions are very easy to follow and there are even FAQs to address "what went wrong" in ways that let you save the batch or use it in a different way.I can say from experience that my friends LOVE receiving homemade soaps as holiday presents and hostess gifts! Whether you're new to the craft, or are looking for creative ideas to step up your own soap making, this book is a wonderful resource for your next soap project!
